S85x0 Phone locked / phone freeze issue guideline

As some of you might have experienced, there are situations when the phone gets into the "locked" state on power up. By "locked" I mean that it request some password you have probably never established by yourself.
I've already seen some posts on several sites from people asking about that password and personally called Samsung support to ask about it.
It seems that happens in several situations. One of tjen is a phone with a SIM lock enabled, but I've also noticed that it generally is a problem on phones that have Exchange synchronization enabled and are using phone password. You might have entered the password or SIM unlock code incorrectly several times, but it seems that might not necessarily be required. It JUST happens.

The password prompt is pretty brief and does not constitute for anything you might have entered by yourself. Samsung support says the default password is 00000000. Well, if your phone ends up in the locked state. It is probably not the password you will be looking for.

The solution is flashing your phone, but it results in data loss.
The other way is entering the password (called Freeze Password) generated by the tool in this thred. The password is unique to your particular phone and consists of 8 digits.
After entering them you may be asked for your current Phone Password. Although you might have established that while using your phone, you need to enter 00000000 then. That being done, you can choose new Phone Password that has to be different from previous one. Your data should stay intact.

It happened to me twice already while using Wave and I managed to address the problem having the FLOCK installed. You may try it for yourself.

FOTA (technology)

Firmware Over-the-Air (FOTA)[1][2][3][4][5] is used for upgrades to mobile phones and tablet computers. The feature goes by several names including Software Update, Firmware Update or Device Management. Originally, firmware updates to a device required visiting a specific service center, with every mobile brand having their own service center. Another method of receiving updates has been by connecting the device via a cable to a PC. Both of these methods were considered inconvenient by consumers and also relied on consumers actively seeking out updates. Therefore the majority of mobile device manufacturers and operators have now adopted FOTA technology for their handsets. If the mobile device has FOTA capability, firmware updates are issued directly "over the air" from the mobile phone service provider to the device. FOTA also allows manufacturers and operators to "push out" firmware upgrades to ensure that mobile consumers have the latest software improvements, which reduces potential customer support costs and increases consumer satisfaction. Muhi Open Mobile Alliance has released a testing process specification on Firmware Update Management which standardize testing methods for FOTA.
Most major mobile phone manufacturers provide information about over the air software-updates on their websites, typically in their customer support section. Manufacturers will usually list which handset models support over-the-air software updating (via FOTA) or which ones still require use of a cable-PC connection.
Red Bend Software also provides a list of hundreds of mobile phone models that have FOTA software.
ARCchart, a UK-based analyst firm, estimates that globally, at least 230 handset models have been released between 2003 and October 2006 that include FOTA support. By 2008, the firm forecasts that 50% of all handsets shipping will be FOTA-enabled. Of that figure, most mid-range and high-end handsets shipping will be FOTA-capable, in addition to a few low-end devices.
Current phone manufacturers that produce FOTA capable phones include LG, Samsung, HTC, NEC, Nokia, Motorola, Sanyo, Kyocera, Sharp, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba and others.
In its report, ARCchart reports that a number of vendors offer firmware update capable server and client technology. These can be categorized into three tiers:
  • FOTA update technology suppliers: HP, InnoPath, Insignia (acquired by Smith Micro) and Red Bend Software. All of these vendors provide client-server FOTA delivery and update technology, with the exception of Red Bend Software which focuses on client-side software.
  • Firmware delivery server vendors: HP, InnoPath and Mformation which offer FOTA delivery (and in some cases firmware lifecycle management) as part of a much broader MDM application suite.
  • MDM server vendors and integrators: Gemalto, HP and WDSGlobal who integrate or repackage firmware management server products from other vendors.
The major competitors in the FOTA client market are:

Approaches

There are three fundamentally different technological approaches to generating delta files and applying these files to the firmware image: patching, padding, and computation.

Patching

Patching involves inserting a jump instruction in the beginning of the block to be replaced, which points to the replacement block. The replacement block is appended to the image in a free expansion area. The drawback is that the updated image is not bit-for-bit identical to the original target version and requires excessive amounts of memory in real-world firmware deployments.

Padding

Padding involves adding excess memory or ‘pads’ around firmware blocks that may be replaced. The challenge here is that it requires additional 10-20% of memory and introduces planning overheads in the manufacturer development process. In addition, memory blocks which are not padded cannot often be updated, which makes the approach impractical for non-sequential updates.

Computation

Computation processes the output from the software compiler and linker to generate optimized update instructions. This approach does not interfere with the development process, yet produces a bit-for-bit exact images. The computational approach allows for predictable firmware update sizes, supports non-consecutive version upgrades and unlimited updates per device.

unlocking/unfreezing S8500/S8530

FLOCK - unlocking/unfreezing S8500/S8530 for free could not be any easier!

This is the solution for unlocking Wave phones.
Big thanks goes to mijoma.
All you do and enter into your phone you do at your own risk. Nobody else but you take whole responsibility for what happens to your phone!
Remember than flashing of phone is a little risky, however if performed properly, risk of damaging anything is very low.

If your phone locked-up all of the sudden - be sure to read this thread aswell: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1787648

Most of bada 1.2 and 2.0 final-release (not ones from beta releases) bootloaders should be supported.
You need some knowledge about flashing.

How to check what lock do you have?
Enter *#7465625# code, you will see list of active and inactive locks.

What do you need?
Wave 1 or 2 phone with bada 1.2 or 2.0
For Wave I with bada 1.2 - FLOCK_S8500_b1.2
For Wave I with bada 2.0 - FLOCK_S8500_b2x
For Wave II with bada 1.2 - FLOCK_S8530_b1.2
For Wave II with bada 2.0 - FLOCK_S8530_b2x

Flash the right FOTA file. Turn off the phone, wait few seconds, and then turn it on holding CALL (so you have to press CALL and ENDCALL, 2 keys) key until white screen with red texts shows up. Release keys.

Be patient, FOTA module is calculating 3 codes (Subset lock, Netlock, Unfreeze) for your phone, it can take up to 10 minutes. After you get the code you are interested in you can turn off the phone.

Write down the codes you need. Turn off the phone by holding power button for 15 seconds or taking off battery.

After obtaining code, do procedure below:
[Netlock], 2 ways:
1. enter unsupported SIM card, start phone and after being asked about "Network Lock" enter Unlock Code you had written down.
2. enter #7465625*638*Unlock code# <thanks to homelessghost for tip>

[Freeze]
1. enter any SIM card, start phone and after being asked about "Freeze" make call and enter code you had written down.

[Subset]
Can anyone provide guide?

That's all - enjoy unlocked phone!

Troubleshooting:
Instead of white screen with red texts, usual booting logo appears and then Bada starts, what am I doing wrong?
Make sure you flashed right FLOCK without errors. If you did so, first - flash APPS from the same bada version, but from ROM that does contain .fota (certain APPS versions can have locked FOTA module), second - if it doesn't work - update your bootloader to some newer/another one and write post here containing information what version of bootloader (bootloader, not bada) you had before that was not working.

Important: Be very careful when writing down and entering unlock code.

If you got any other questions - please ask in this thread.
It is possible that some phones are not unlockable this method. Then the code wouldn't show up.

General method concept (if you are really interested in sources or way how it works - please PM me or mijoma) should work for most of "Samsung 3G" phones - like JET, Wave3, Monte. If you are owner of locked phone of this class and you are able to do dumps of memory - please contact with me.
